Lithographs

Lithographs from the 1930's to the 1970's

“The next section shows some of my lithographs. Done over about 40 years, of different places and subjects, they are mostly figurative. When I was in New York in 1938 I studied lithography with Emil Ganso. Since then I have made about 40 editions. Some of these I did at the Taller Grafica in Mexico City in 1951. Some I made with Onoya-san in Tokyo in 1957-1958. Most of the other editions were printed by George C. Miller & Son in New York City…”

“Good Friday lithograph, 1951—I saw this procession in Guanajuato, Mexico and was fascinated by the combination of Indian and Catholic ritual…I observed women gleaning in the fields near Oaxaca. It seemed almost biblical in character. I worked a long time on the stone ending with scratching the fields and sheaths into the stone…”

“Gleaners I, 1958--On a visit to the seacoast in Kamakura, Japan I sketched and photographed women gleaning little fish from the nets after the fisherman had taken out the big ones. This was the first of a series of lithographs on the theme of gleaners.”

There is an extensive collection of lithographs done in Mexico of rural life, religious festivals and life in Mexico City with a few woodcuts. There are lithographs from Japan, Portugal, Brazil, Maine, a Chassidic wedding in Israel, and the Hudson Valley Orchestra.
