“Tree, 1059-Starting out on a large sheet of Japanese paper with freshly rubbed up Chinese ink, this painting was entirely an improvised adventure. I had no preconceived image. First I established the space the then the tree grew as I painted.”
“Around 1981 I began paining improvisations on Biblical themes of Creation. I had in mind lines from Genesis ant the 104th Psalm. Some of the pintings are in ink. For most I use intense watercolors. After careful planning of the composition, I work rapidly on the final painting and let things happen.”
The complete collection of these widely imaginative works remains in the family collection. The Creation Series is the bookend of an artistic career that started with the stark realism of the 1930s and ended with improvisation on the theme of Genesis.
